Province Unite del Centroitalia
The United Provinces of Central Italy (Italian: Province Unite del Centroitalia), also known as the Union of Central Italy, Confederation of Central Italy, or Government General of Central Italy, was a client state of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.
The United Provinces of Central Italy was established in 1859, formed under the union of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Duchy of Parma, Duchy of Modena and Reggio, and the Papal Legations after each of their monarchs were removed due to popular revolution.
On November 7, 1859, Eugenio Emanuele di Savoia-Carignano was elected as the regent, but King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia refused to support this election, and instead appointed Carlo Boncompagni as the Governor General of Central Italy, who was responsible for diplomatic and military affairs.
On December 8, 1859, the territories were incorporated into the Royal Provinces of Emilia. After referendums were held in March 1860, it was formally annexed to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. In exchange for recognition from France, Savoy and Nice were given to the country.
Being a client state of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, it is likely that the United Provinces of Central Italy used the Sardinian lira, the currently issued coin of the kingdom. After the unification of Italy in 1861, the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia fell, as did the Sardinian lira, which was subsequently replaced with the Italian lira of the Kingdom of Italy.
