|Shan State Army|
|v · d · e|
The Shan State Army (Burmese: ရှမ်းပြည် တပ်မတော်), commonly abbreviated as SSA, was an army formed in 1964 to resist the military government of Burma (now Myanmar) in Shan State. It was later split into two factions, the Shan State Army - South or SSA-S, which is still active in opposing the government, and the Shan State Army - North or SSA-N, which is more conciliatory towards the government. Lieutenant General Yawd Serk of the SSA-S later announced that there was no SSA South and SSA North, and there would be only one SSA following a ceremony held on May 21, 2011.
