The 10 franc coin is a non-circulating legal tender commemorative coin that was issued by the Republic of Senegal in 1968. It was produced in celebration of the country's eighth year of independence from France, which was granted in 1960. Although the piece has a legal tender face value equivalent to 10.00 West African CFA francs in Senegal, it is intended primarily for collectors and does not see much (if any) general circulation.
The coin is composed of .900 fine gold, weighs approximately 3.2 grams, and measures 20 millimeters in diameter. It has coin alignment and is round in shape. Featured in the center of the obverse is the coat of arms of Senegal – which consists of an escutcheon bearing a lion rampant on one half and a baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) and the Senegal River on the other. This escutcheon is surrounded by palm branches tied with a ribbon bearing the French motto "UN PEUPLE UN BUT UNE FOI" (English: "One Nation, One Goal, One Faith"). Above the escutcheon is a five-pointed star, and below is the National Order of the Lion, an order awarded by the Senegalese government since 1960. Inscribed along the rim of the coin in a clockwise direction is the French state title of the Republic of Senegal, "REPUBLIQUE DU SENEGAL", which commences at the bottom left rim and concludes at the bottom right. Five five-pointed stars occupy the remainder of the rim. Printed in the center of the reverse on two lines is the face value "10 FRANCS" (French: Dix francs), with the numeral displayed in a larger font than the word. Underneath this text is the Gregorian date "1968". Written in a counterclockwise direction along the bottom rim of the reverse is the French legend "INDEPENDANCE 4 AVRIL 1960" (English: "Independence, 4 April 1960"). Such an inscription refers to the date when the short-lived Mali Federation, consisting of modern Mali and Senegal, signed a transfer of power agreement with France, effectively granting the former independence. It commences at the upper left periphery of the reverse and concludes at the top right. The remaining portion of the periphery is filled by seven five-pointed stars. The rims of both the obverse and reverse are raised.
The total mintage of the 1968 Senegalese 10 franc coin is currently unknown. It was distributed as a proof in a set with similar pieces denominated at 25, 50, and 100 francs.
