The 50 cêntimo coin is a coin that was issued in 1977 by the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe (known as Saint Thomas and Prince Island in the Standard Catalog of World Coins) to commemorate the Food and Agriculture Organization, an agency of the United Nations dedicating to combating world hunger. With a value of only 0.50 dobra, it is the lowest denominated coin ever produced for São Tomé and Príncipe. While the coin is no longer found commonly in circulation due to chronic inflation, it was never demonetized and is still considered legal tender.
The coin is composed of brass, weighs 1.73 grams, and has a diameter of 17 millimeters and a thickness of 1.16. It has medallic alignment and a reeded edge, and is round in shape. Featured in the center of obverse is the coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe — which consists of a palm tree in a shield that is surmounted by a five-pointed star and supported by a falcon (Falco) and a parrot (Psittaciformes), with a banner bearing the Portuguese state title "REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE" (English: "Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe") above and one with the text "UNIDADE DISCIPLINA TRABALHO" (English: "Unity, discipline, work") below. Starting at the bottom left of the coin and extending upward to end at the other side of the obverse is the Portuguese state title "REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE", and engraved directly below the arms at the very bottom of the coin is the year of minting. An image of a fish with seaweed in the background is shown on the reverse. Inscribed along the coin's rim above it is the Portuguese text "AUMENTEMOS A PRODUÇAO", which translates to English as "increase the production". Below the illustration is the coin's value, written as "50 CÊNTIMOS" with the number and denomination printed on their own lines and the former being much larger than the latter.
A total of 2,002,500 examples, including 2500 proofs, were produced.
