MMK 10 pyat 1953

A ten pya coin from 1953.

The pya (Burmese: ပြား) is the subunit of the Myanma kyat. When the kyat was introduced in 1852 by the Konbaung Dynasty, the pya was equal to four pe, and the kyat equaled 80 pya, or 20 pe. From 1943 to 1945, the second kyat was subdivided into 100 cents, replacing the traditional pya subunit. In 1949, the pya was reintroduced as the subunit Burmese rupee and was then applied the current kyat in 1952.
