The 1 dollar coin was first minted by Namibia during December 1993. Since then, the general issue coins have been minted in 1996, 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2008. Commemorative coins at this denomination have also been produced. Today, the dollar coin remains in use within Namibia.[1][2][3][4][5]

HistoryEdit

General issueEdit

The general issue 1 dollar coin was first minted during December 1993. It is composed of a brass alloy. The coin weighs 4.96 grams, has a diameter of 22.6 millimeters, and has a thickness of 1.9 millimeters. On the obverse is the coat of arms of Namibia with the year of minting and state title (REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA). Shown on the reverse is a Bateleur eagle and the value. The edge is reeded.[1][2]

First commemorative coinEdit

During 1995, Namibia introduced its first commemorative coins on occasion of five years of Namibian independence. Along with these was a 1 dollar coin which was composed of cupronickel and had a diameter of 37 millimeters. Displayed on the obverse was the coat of arms of Namibia with the year of minting and state title. Shown on the reverse was a colorized desert landscape along with the value and an inscription reading, "5TH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE".[3]

Miss Universe Namibia coinEdit

In 1995, a second commemorative coin was issued on occasion of Miss Universe Namibia. Like the coin commemorating 5 years of Namibian independence, this commemorative coin was also composed of cupronickel and had a diameter of 37 millimeters. Displayed on the obverse was the coat of arms of Namibia with the year of minting and state title. Shown on the reverse is a colorized gemsbok with the text "MISS UNIVERSE NAMIBIA" and value.[4]

Marine Life Protection coinEdit

During 1998, Namibia issued its third 1 dollar commemorative coin, which was issued in commemoration of Marine Life Protection. It was composed of cupronickel and had a diameter of 37 millimeters. Displayed on the obverse was the coat of arms of Namibia with the year of minting and state title. Shown on the reverse was a colorized whale and calf with the value and an inscription reading, "MARINE LIFE PROTECTION". Only 7,500 pieces were minted.[5]
