The 2 peso banknote was issued by the First Mexican Empire during the last year of its reign in 1823 and later by Mexico. It was equal to 2 pesos or 16 reales.

The note was very simple. The obverse, designed by the Imperial Bank of Mexico, depending on the time of printing (January or April), displayed either the coat of arms of the Mexican Empire or of Mexico. In text on the obverse was EL IMPERIO MEXICANO promete pagar esta cantidad de DOS PESOS con arreglo sobre este asunto", which promised the pay of two pesos. The reverse of the note featured no design or lettering.
