The 3 mark coin was first issued by the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck in 1908, during the second (and final) year of Ernst Christian Johannes Schön's mayorship[4], and continued being issued until 1914.[1]

The coin had the standard composition and measurements as every other 3 gold mark coin issued by the states of the German Empire at the time, being composed of .900 fine silver, weighing 16.667 grams, and measuring 33 millimeters in diameter.[2] Because Lübeck was not ruled by a duke, king, or prince, an individual was not present on the obverse. Instead, the coat of arms of the city was displayed, partially encircled by a legend reading "FREIE UND HANSESTADT LÜBECK".[3] An "A" mint mark underneath the arms was separated from the legend by two bullets (•)[3], and indicated the coin was struck at the mint in Berlin.[5] The Reichsadler of the German Empire was engraved in the center of the reverse, and was accompanied by the state title of the Second Reich (DEUTSCHES REICH), the coin's value (as "DREI MARK"), and the year. Along the coin's edge was an inscription that read "GOTT MIT UNS".[2] At least 207,336 examples were issued, with an unknown number from 1908 being struck in proof quality.[3]

Three patterns composed of copper, silver, and zinc were made in 1915.[1]
