The 1 franc coin is a fantasy coin of the former State of Katanga, a short-lived unrecognized republic that proclaimed independence from Congo-Léopoldville and existed from 1960 to 1963. Produced by a Chinese company in 2013, the piece was made nearly fifty years after Katanga's reintegration into the Congo. As a fantasy, the piece does not carry the status of legal tender, and only holds value to collectors of coin-like objects. It was struck alongside similar 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 250 franc coins.

The piece is composed of copper-plated steel and measures 20 millimeters in diameter. It has coin alignment and a plain edge, and like most coins, is round in shape. The rims of both the obverse and reverse are raised and undecorated.

Displayed in the center of the obverse is the coat of arms of the State of Katanga – which consists of an escutcheon modeled after the Katangese flag, featuring three Katanga crosses and a diagonal belt dividing two larger components. Printed horizontally above the rendition of the arms is the date "1960", representing the year in which the State of Katanga declared its independence. The state title "Katanga" is engraved below the central illustration, with the word "ESSAI", French for "test", inscribed underneath in a significantly smaller font. Featured at the right center of the reverse is a Katanga cross, a type of commodity currency once used in the Congo. The "face value" of the piece is abbreviated to the left, in one of the angles of the cross, as "1 FR", with the numeral shown in larger print than the "FR". Written below, in another angle of the Katanga cross, is the Gregorian date of minting, "2013".

The total mintage of the piece is currently unknown.
