The 2 rin coin is a pattern coin that was minted by the Empire of Japan during 1885, the eighteenth year of the reign of Emperor Meiji (Mutsuhito). Had it been put into circulation, it would have had a value equivalent to 0.002 yen.

The coin is composed of copper and is round in shape. Featured in the center of the obverse is the Imperial Seal of Japan — which consists solely of a stylized image of a chrysanthemum flower. The state title of Japan is written from right to left as "本日大" (romanized: Dai Nippon; English: "Great Japan"), while the year of minting is written in the same direction at the right periphery of the coin as "年八十治明" (Meiji jū hachi-nen), which basically signifies production during the eighteenth year of Meiji's reign. The coin's value is written in Latin script as "2 RIN" at the very bottom of the coin. The three legends are separated from each other by bullet points. The value is shown again on the reverse, inscribed vertically as "二厘" (Ni rin).

The Standard Catalog of World Coins gives an uncirculated 2 rin coin a market value of US$13,500. A coin of MS-63 grade was auctioned off by Heritage Auctions in 2011, starting with an estimated price of US$5000 and selling for US$13,000.
