The 5 lire coin was circulated beginning about two years after the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as king of Italy. They were equivalent to 5 French francs, and was officially coined until the year 1814, though several vintage replicas were created in Austria during 1819. Production centers were found in Bologna, Milan, and Venice.

The coin was 910 silver and had a mass of roughly 25 grams. Its diameter reach 37 mm. It was designed by Napoleon, who had added his face to the obverse and the current coat of arms of Italy on the reverse. On the edge of the coin, the words "DIO PROTEGGE L'ITALIA" are written, which translates into "God Protects Italy".
