Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich was a German medalist and engraver who worked at the Berlin Mint during the 19th century. During his life, Kullrich designed many coins for the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire.

BiographyEdit

Kullrich was born on December 18, 1821 in Dahme, Brandenburg, the son of blacksmith Johann Friedrich Kullrich and his wife. Early in his life, Kullrich decided to take up smithing, which he learned from his father. He began studying at the Berlin Art Academy in 1849. Two years later, Kullrich caught the attention of sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch, who entrusted him with engraving a medal of the Equestrian Statue of Frederick the Great, Berlin. Kullrich was appointed as an engraver at the Berlin Mint in 1860. During his time working for the mint, Kullrich designed several coins for the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, and the Kingdom of Romania, which was at the time led by the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He died in Berlin on September 1, 1887.[1][2]

Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich was the father of architect Friedrich Kullrich and engraver Reinhard Kullrich, who also found work at the Berlin Mint.
