The 1 poisha coin (alternatively 1 paisa) is a circulation piece of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It was issued in a single type by the Bangladesh Bank in 1974, and struck under commission at the Berlin Mint in East Germany. The piece currently holds a legal tender face value of 0.01 taka in its country of origin, but rarely circulates due to its low purchasing power.
The coin is composed of aluminum and measures 0.51 grams in mass, 16 millimeters in diameter, and 1.15 millimeters in thickness. It has medallic alignment and a plain edge, and like most coins, is round in shape. The rims of both sides of the piece are raised and undecorated.
The obverse features the national emblem of Bangladesh – which consists of a shapla (Nymphaea nouchali) resting on water, bordered on two sides by rice sheaves and surmounted by four five-pointed stars and three connected jute leaves.
The contents of the coin's reverse are enclosed within an ornamental circular border. A large Bengali "১" (1) representing the face value is engraved in the center, flanked to the left and right by small floral decorations. The Bengali inscription "এক পয়সা" (Romanized: êk paẏasā), which translates as "one poisha", also appears below, traveling counterclockwise along the bottom of the ornamental border. Written in the opposite direction at the top of the border is the Bengali name of Bangladesh, "বাংলাদেশ" (Romanized: Bāṃlādēśa). Engraved in smaller print below, between the country name and numeral, is the Gregorian date of minting, rendered in Bengali numerals as "১৯৭৪" (1974).
About 300,000,000 examples of the coin were manufactured during a single year of production. Only business strikes of this particular type are known to exist.
